Great signage does more than provide direction. It enhances spaces and creates memorable experiences. Take our recent CNC routered signage work. When design, materials and craftsmanship come together, wayfinding can become an integral part of the architecture itself. The BHP Perth Head Office signage project showcases how we can transform wayfinding into architectural features. And importantly, create the WOW factor!

BHP has recently undertaken a premium four-level CBD building refurbishment. Signs & Lines was engaged to design, manufacture and install a range of internal lobby wayfinding signage elements for the foyer of the head office. The project included two bespoke freestanding directory totems, a major double-sided illuminated entry logo feature and smaller reception directional signage elements.

Architectural Wayfinding

Each component was carefully designed as a feature within the main lobby area.  Importantly the goal was to complement the building’s contemporary interior design while providing a seamless visitor experience. The two custom directory totems were a key focus of the project. One of the totems serves as the building directory and the second incorporates a digital display for dynamic content and enhanced visitor communication.

CNC Router Work

A major design requirement was to incorporate a feature pattern that flowed consistently across all signage elements throughout the lobby. This distinctive finish was achieved through precision CNC router engraving across the aluminium cladding. Each totem used two different engraving profiles:-

 – A feature pattern engraved at 1.8mm wide and 1mm deep

– Vertical elements engraved at 4mm wide and 2.5mm deep

Maintaining consistent line quality, depth and edge definition required the skills of our router operator.  The large-format aluminium panels required careful tooling selection, detailed CNC programming and precise machining control.

Manufacture

Each totem were fabricated using an aluminium frame clad with 5mm ali panels. The directory panels were finished with 10mm white acrylic panels fitted with precision-cut 3mm aluminium lettering. The result? A refined and premium appearance consistent with the surrounding architectural finishes.

The double-sided illuminated entry logo element provided another key feature within the lobby. Due to its installation height and the operational requirements of the commercial office, night works were necessary. This way our installation team completed the works with minimal disruption to building occupants and office operations.

Collaboration Counts

From design development through to fabrication and installation, this project involved true collaboration. The Signs & Lines design, manufacturing and installation teams worked together to deliver the works on time.  The completed signage package transformed functional wayfinding elements into premium architectural features. This demonstrates the versatility of precision engraving as both a decorative and functional fabrication technique.

Final Wrap

At Signs & Lines, we are proud to deliver signage solutions that combine innovation, technical expertise and attention to detail. Using CNC routered signage creates interesting wayfinding.  Importantly this allows signage to both guide people and enhance the spaces they inhabit.  So to find out how CNC routered signage can be incorporated into your next project call one of our team or email today!
