Perth’s CBD is entering a new phase of growth with the development of the Edith Cowan University (ECU) City Campus. Designed as a connected education and cultural precinct, the campus brings together students, staff, and the wider community in a complex, multi-building environment at the heart of the city. Excellence in wayfinding at ECU City Campus is essential to ensuring people can move confidently through this new space, from first-time visitors to daily campus users. Find out more in our ECU Wayfinding Case Study.
Wayfinding signage plays a crucial role in shaping how people experience the campus. It provides clarity, supports accessibility, improves safety, and ensures people can navigate the site intuitively from the moment they arrive. For a new campus in a high-traffic CBD location, effective wayfinding is not just functional, it is foundational. This project involved over 3,500 signs across 12 levels! Plus external sky signs – find out more in our Sky Sign Case Study.
Why Wayfinding Signage Is Needed
As a newly developed university campus, ECU City must communicate clearly from day one. Students, staff, and visitors are navigating the site for the first time, often during peak periods and across multiple buildings and levels.
Wayfinding signage supports:
- Clear navigation across a large, unfamiliar campus
- Efficient movement during busy times
- Reduced confusion and reliance on staff for directions
- A welcoming and professional first impression
In a dense urban environment, clear signage helps the campus function smoothly while reinforcing confidence and ease of movement for everyone on site. On the design front Signs & Lines worked closely with BuroNorth to ensure the design strategy and intent became a reality.
Client Overview: Multiplex and ECU City Campus
This wayfinding signage package was delivered in collaboration with Multiplex, the builder responsible for the ECU City Campus development. Signs & Lines has an established working relationship with Multiplex, supporting them across multiple large-scale projects throughout Western Australia.
Our ongoing collaboration reflects:
- Experience working within live construction environments
- Consistent delivery across complex project scopes
- Strong communication with builders and consultants
This partnership ensured signage solutions were delivered efficiently while aligning with the architectural intent and operational needs of the campus.
Why Wayfinding Signage Matters
Wayfinding signage directly influences how people interact with a space. At ECU City Campus, it supports functionality, inclusion, and safety while contributing to a positive user experience.
Clear signage helps people reach their destination quickly and confidently, reducing stress and improving first impressions. This is particularly important in a campus that integrates education, performance, and public spaces within the CBD.
Accessibility is also central to Finding Your Way at ECU City Campus, with signage incorporating:
- Braille and tactile elements
- High-contrast text for improved legibility
- Universal symbols for intuitive understanding
These features ensure people of all abilities can navigate the campus independently and with confidence.
Wayfinding signage also enhances safety by clearly identifying levels, exits, and key circulation routes, supporting efficient movement during everyday use and emergency situations.
Scope of Works: Wayfinding Sign Types
The wayfinding signage package included a wide range of sign types, each designed to meet specific functional and accessibility requirements while maintaining visual consistency across the campus.
The scope of works included:
- Toilet signage using clear, universally recognised symbols
- LED wall signs for high visibility in key locations
- Braille signage supporting accessible navigation
- Wall-mounted informational signs identifying rooms and facilities
- Directional signage guiding movement through corridors and intersections
- Level signage assisting navigation across multi-storey buildings
