Winter is a tricky time of year for signage installations and this sky looks all too familiar at the moment. Not all days installing signs or doing flag rotations are sunshine and light!! And to the #Signsandlines team who are battling the weather at the moment, keep your spirits high. This surfboard signage at Seaside is certainly tested the planning and logistics departments as we manouvered our way around the weather…

Seaside Wayfinding Signage

This project used signage that was in keeping with its coastal location overlooking the Indian Ocean. Taking inspiration from the Seaside Estate name, the surfboard wayfinding signage for this land development site was definitely a ‘point break’. Using surfboard shaped totems really captures attention. The double sided entry and directional signs created a unique, eyecatching shape for visitors and residents alike.

At the outset our team ensured correct planning, building licence and surveyors approvals had been obtained. The signage brief included:-

  • one main ID pylon sign at 5m by 2.3m wide;
  • two large directional signs 3m by 1.3m
  • two smaller directional signs at 1.5m high by 0.7m wide.

Our scope of works included building licences, site survey, artwork, manufacture and installation.

Surfboard Signage Design

At the out set our design team prepared detailed shop drawings indicating how each sign was manufactured into a slanting surfboard shape. The ‘lopsided’ surfboard design needed to have a strong foundation to maintain its structural integrity. This was achieved using an internal steel main and sub frames made by our in-house fabrication team.

The router department cut the surfboard shapes from 3mm ACP. The steel frames were then clad with ACP covered with digitally printed designs which had been cold gloss laminated. Assembly was completed in our workshop.

The main ID pylon sign included 20mm 3D acrylic lettering and ‘opening hours’ produced from vinyl for ease of updates.

Installation

Once all signage had been prepared in the factory a hiab was used to transport the elements to site. The installation team had two visits to site. Initially they prepared concrete footings, bolt cages and reinforcing well in advance. Then on the day of installation a few weeks later a hiab carefully fitted the signs into place.
