Perth’s Signage Stars – Our Industry Experts
Continuing our Star Performers series, this time we move into the hardcore areas of the business. When it comes to Star Performers, it’s impossible to overlook our next candidate. He is a noisy, dirty but ultimately creative person – especially when it comes to metal. His love of metal knows no bounds (well, actually it runs second to fishing!!). For over 3 years this person has held the very substantial reins as king of our metal fabrication department here at Signs & Lines. Find out more as we unravel their many talents – and a few hidden secrets. So what does it take to be part of Perth’s signage stars?
- Experience – of course! And this person has it from many diverse career twists and turns.
- Knowledge – Knowledge of how to make, weld and fabricate metal. This is no easy skill. This person’s role requires significant mental input at the outset and consideration of how all the metal elements will fix together, before making precision cuts and reassembling components.
Our Star Performer #6 has both experience and knowledge. In fact, when asked if he could hang out with any cartoon character who would it be he responded ‘Iron Man’. That figures!!
Star Performer #6 – The Rhino
Introducing The Rhino. This is a nickname that seems to be incredibly well suited. Ryan is his name, but The Rhino speaks well to a man who, like the animal, is rare, a relatively extinct species and notably large in both size and stature. A rhinoceros has one or two horns, and a thick (1.5–5 cm) protective skin. Again this seems spookily fitting!
So let’s find out a bit more about our star fabricator.
When not hard at work we know that fishing is a rather popular past time. When quizzed about this hobby I found out that a secret location off the northern beaches would be the favourite spot to throw out a line – sorry, no map co-ordinates given!
In terms of the one that got away, Rhino tells of a mighty Sailfish hooked in the seas off Brisbane. It danced on the line out of the water for almost an hour – only to get away! Such is the fisherman’s tale!
I gather that here in the West of the Perth coast there have been many a bronzed whaler shark that has been tempted by Ryan’s fishing skills, and a particularly fine bald chin Groper who made a memorable experience.
Whatever the stories, the fish and Rhino clearly have a good time out there 🙂
Rhino’s Star Qualities – Bucket List
When not at work or fishing we wanted to find out what would be on Rhino’s bucket list. I was not surprised to see retirement featuring high on this list (hopefully not too soon though!).
Skydiving was also on the list which is a very popular bucket list item it seems (several of our team feel that taking to the skies and jumping into space with only a flimsy piece of parachute is their idea of fun!!).
We also asked Rhino about what song he’d belt out at the karaoke bar. We know that Rhino is not afraid to use his vocals:) Highway to Hell was the answer. And then what band/artist (dead or alive) would play at his funeral. The Answer. No surprises here – ACDC with Bon Scott.
Some Good Advice
To finish, we asked Rhino what the best piece of advice he has ever been given and this one was from his mum.
‘Read between the Lines’
This is particularly pertinent to Rhino’s line of work. Whilst he will be studying our detailed shop drawings with a keen eye, when it comes to the challenge of fabricating signs, sometimes the meaning or solutions aren’t found on the paper, they are in hidden in the spaces. Rhino has proved himself to be a master at this interpretation.
