A Star is Born
Congrats to Brooke – one of our next gen signmakers!! Last week Brooke finished her Cert III Signs & Graphics apprenticeship at North Metro TAFE in Midland. Starting in July 2022, the course involved 3 years of block release study, learning the trade under the tutorage of Alan Peardon. Every few months Brooke would take a break from her Signs & Lines work to attend TAFE for a week or two of intense block learning. Each block involves understanding and perfecting a different skill set – often resulting in a finished product as you can see by the examples shown [see above].
Brooke was one of 8 apprentices who completed the course together. As the only female she may have been a small representative of the ”fairer sex” in numbers, but definitely not in terms of ability or ambition. As you can see her talents include working with vinyls, 3D lettering, LEDs and sign assembly. Plus a wealth of experience on site installing all types of signs in major fit-outs, office developments and venues.
Quality Work
As you can see by the photo below, Brooke shows amazing promise in sign making. This is an example of paint and brushwork.
Her favourite aspects of the training were the brushwork and spray painting – both which require creative talent and focus.
Expectations vs Reality
We asked Brooke how the actual TAFE course differed from her expectations at the outset. She admitted that it was very different to what she expected. From a baseline of no knowledge of signs, she realises now that signage is a lot more complex and complicated than she expected. [We hear this ALOT, just quietly]. The positive of this is that Brooke feels she has learned significantly more than she ever imagined.
Whilst her favoured skills were brushwork and spray painting, her least favourite was routing. All good intel to know as you embark on a career in signage. We look forward to seeing where the trade takes her into the future.
Final Wrap
