Brookfield Place is one of Australia’s most awarded properties. It’s also the second tallest building in Perth, standing at over 234 meters. Signs & Lines work at Brookfield Place in 2024 featured a major upgrade to the end of trip signage – aka EOT signage. The office building can accommodate more than 5,000 people so with the key drivers being a safe, healthy and productive space, the recent refurbishment of the EOT areas was an important part of the revamp.

What is End of Trip Signage?

End-of-trip facilities (EOTF) are amenities that support people who walk, jog or cycle to work, or those who take exercise during their lunch or break times. They are usually located in central areas like offices, public transport hubs, and commercial buildings. For this end of trip signage was required to be design, manufactured and installed into the basement 2 area. The new signage connects five key areas – the lift lobby, two bike stores, the amenities areas, accessible facilities and buiding exit onto street level. Wayfinding for both the pedestrian user journey and the cyclist user journey was considered as part of the planning.

In this case our brief included the following sign types:-

  • Directional signage – located along the critical pedestrian routes through the space, acrylic lettering in black and white, fixed to wall;
  • Directional signage – on American White Oak timber panel, engraved detail into timber, black acrylic letters, fixed to wall;
  • Information signs – large and small sizes, produced on a black 2 pac painted ali panel, with digital prints;
  • Amenities – male, female, change and toilet blade signs made out of aluminium, 2 pac painted, welded to an ali frame and fixed with countersunk screws;
  • Accessible feature Wayfinding signage – located at key decision points, the wayfinding signage incorporates timber panels of American White Oak with routered detail in parametric flow patterns. Signs used to show amenities locations with braille rather than plain signage.
  • Graphic banding – frosted vinyl banding strips installed onto glass and block out, full size, glazing panels.
  • Locker ID numbers – over 1,300 locker IDs made of acrylic lettering painted in black 2 pac, fixed to each locker;
  • Locker Info – acrylic lettering and arrows painted in 2 pac black, fixed to wall;
  • Concierge desk – installed Rimex lettering in copper directly to face of concierge desk.
What is a Parametric Flow Pattern?

The unique features of the wayfinding signage in the project use a distinctive routered pattern into the timber. A parametric pattern is a design method in which features, such as building elements and engineering components, are shaped based on algorithmic processes rather than direct manipulation.

In this case, the design pack by Zebra Creative focused on inspiration drawn from place. This incorporated contours inspired by water and people who have flowed through this place. This theme extends through the wall finishes, signage, mural and colours.

In this case the parametric wood design shows eight levels of thickness in the wood simulating flow. The wood is 22mm thick, and each router level ranges from 1-18mm deep. This creates a contour effect that appear to flow in random shapes.
