SAFETY TOGETHER (& OUR NEW CHAMPION!)

Safety Champion

Rod was voted a worthy winner of our 2020 Safety Champion competition. In conjunction with Safe Work Month, our Safety Champion initiative allowed everyone to consider how we approach safety as a company. Interestingly over 65% of our staff received at least one nomination for Safety Champion – a good indication of how many people influence the overall safety of our team.  It really is ‘safety together’. Staff voted for Rod in a closed ballot that confirmed his great focus on all things safety – both in the factory and on site. Well done Rod!

Our New Safety Slogan

Safety together is very important to us. And this Work Safe Month has been very safety focused – as you’d expect! As usual, together our team have embraced all our OSHE related initiatives. One of these was the Safety Slogan competition.  We have a new slogan – as voted by the team! We had over 20 suggestions which were all great in their own right. In true democratic style we took a vote during the Toolbox Meeting and a front runner emerged.

So here goes … drum roll please …. ‘Take 5 and stay alive’.

It works! It’s very catchy and relates well to the OSHE messages we have been promoting over the last decade.

Take 5 and Stay Alive Meaning

And if anyone is in any doubt about what a Take 5 is – here is a brief description:-

Take 5 safety is a program that aims to inform employees and their workers about the potential hazards in the workplace and the best preventive measures. While a formal risk assessment procedure is still necessary, it helps to take time and review a particular job. Your workers can do this within five minutes before they start working.

  1. STOP, LOOK & LISTEN: Start right and you’ll finish the job safely and successfully. Employees should always take time to observe their work area before performing any job. This will help them focus on what they have to do and spot potential problems that may hinder them from completing the work efficiently.
  2. REVIEW THE TASK: Think about the processes involved in carrying out a particular task. This will remind them about the important steps and effective ways to finish the job. It will allow them to identify the right tools and techniques to use and prepare them beforehand.
  3. IDENTIFY THE RISKS: Occupational safety risks include those that are already present in the workplace and those that may arise during operations.
  4. MANAGE THE RISKS: As a safety measure, employees should not start working if there are potential hazards in the work area. They must report to their supervisor or team leader, who will then review the risks and take necessary action.
  5. GET STARTED: After you have successfully implemented the preventive measures, it’s time to commence the task. Workers should always perform their jobs with caution to avoid accidents. After completing the task, they must assess the quality of their work and leave the work area in order.
