SAFE WORK OCTOBER AT SIGNS AND LINES

Safe Work October at Signs & Lines focused on the people behind our finished signs. Throughout the month, we explored everyday safety across the workshop, office and installation sites.

Our campaign followed four themes: For Life, For Health, For the Future and For All. These reflected the focus areas of National Safe Work Month.

Through practical reminders, hazard-spotting activities and staff feedback, we brought each topic back to work our team does.

Making Everyday Signage Work Safer

Making and installing signs involves a wide range of tasks. For example, moving a large sign needs a clear route, suitable equipment and people who understand the plan.

Our campaign encouraged everyone to pause before starting. We also revisited Take 5 checks and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). These help teams consider the task, identify hazards and plan controls before work begins.

If the job changes, the plan needs another look. That means checking the risks again and making sure everyone involved understands the changes.

One myth-busting activity challenged a familiar thought: “It’ll only take two minutes.” However, a short job can still carry risks. The reminder was simple: take time to check before getting started.

Protecting Health

Over Time

Some hazards are easy to see. Others, however, can affect health over time.

During Safe Work October, we covered dust, fumes, sun exposure, repeated movements and fatigue. For example, cutting, sanding and painting provided practical prompts to discuss extraction and airflow.

Lifting tasks also brought attention to the need for suitable aids and support. Meanwhile, outdoor work highlighted the importance of sun protection.

Across these topics, the focus stayed on daily habits and controls that help protect health over the long term.

Listening to Our Team

Staff feedback was another important part of the campaign. Team members shared concerns, offered ideas and highlighted the value of helping each other when work gets busy.

Two comments captured that spirit:

“When the workload builds up, let’s talk about it.”

“Need a hand? Just ask. We’re a team.”

These comments also reinforced the value of making time to talk. People doing the work can spot issues and suggest practical improvements. In turn, their feedback helps identify areas for review.

Whether someone works in the office, workshop or on site, their input matters.

Keeping Safety in Focus After October

Our campaign round-up featured photos of the people behind Signs & Lines. Alongside the safety messages, these recognised the team who bring our projects to life.

Thank you to everyone who took part and shared ideas throughout the month. As we move into November, we’ll keep encouraging those conversations.

October has ended, but planning each task, raising concerns and looking out for each other remain part of everyday work.
